A first for Bruce House, and a sign of things to come—Envision Forum 2017 impressed with its attention to detail, focus on rehabilitation and episodic illness, and close connections to the community.

Panelists with lived experience, discussions on HIV and aging, and presentations from local service providers brought context to issues facing individuals impacted by HIV.  Presenters included Dr. Kelly O’Brien (Univ. of Toronto), Kate Murzin (Realize), Dr. Mark Kaluzienski (Ottawa Hospital), and Ryan Peck (HALCO).

The event’s significance was recognized with official letters from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau; Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne; Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson; and a warm address at the gala by Ottawa Counsellor Catherine McKenney.

Bruce House is grateful to our host at The Arts Court and for the support from CATIE, The Gilmour Inn, Beau’s All Natural Brewery, Massine’s Your Independent Grocer, Starbucks Coffee Co. at 131 Queen St., T’s Pub, the City of Ottawa, and caterer extraordinaire Sweets & Desserts by Don.

In recognition that this event was held on unceded Algonquin lands, Envision Forum 2017 began with a blessing from local First Nations elders.  Local drag legends Koko Domenique Shennel, Master Cameron Eric Leon, Dixie Landers, and Tatyana Romanov brought their fabulous talent to the evening gala reception, as well as a reminder of the drag community’s tremendous help in raising funds and awareness at the beginning of the AIDS crisis and every year since.

Bruce House staff are currently reviewing the overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants and already making plans for the next forum.
