Today the Ottawa Food Bank released the 2024 Hunger Report . Simply put, food banks and food programs in Ottawa have reached the breaking point.
2019: 1 in 15 households in Ottawa experienced food insecurity.
2022: 1 in 7 households
2024: 1 in 4
We can’t do this anymore. There has been a 90% increase in visits to Ottawa Food Bank member agencies since 2019. The charities and services providing food can not meet this increased need.
39% of food banks in Ottawa have to turn hungry people away every week because there isn’t enough food.
Demand that all levels of government fund food programs and fund solutions to long-term systemic changes. You can be part of the solution.
Enough is Enough. Governments at all levels cannot continue to ignore this basic need, to pass the responsibility on to charities, or to tell people to “just get a job”. This is willful neglect.
