Stepping Up for Her Community: Sonia Emuan Wins Business Achievement Award for expert and compassionate footcare

Ottawa, ON February 10, 2026 — The Global Community Alliance (GCA) is proud to announce Sonia Emuan, Founder and Director of Sonia Foot Care, as 2026 ‘s Business Achievement Award recipient, recognizing her outstanding leadership, community impact, and dedication to advancing foot health across the National Capital Region (NCR).

Emuan ‘s work as a foot care nurse, educator, and community health advocate is helping people of all walks of life and with limited means get access to high‑quality foot care across Ottawa. As the founder of one of the city’s highest‑rated foot health practices, she has helped more than 5,000 people improve mobility, prevent complications, and live pain‑free. Guided by her motto, “Don’t just walk, thrive,” Emuan blends her clinical expertise with compassion, a cheerful smile and an unwavering commitment.

“Sonia Emuan exemplifies what the GCA Business Achievement Award stands for – leadership rooted in service, and compassion. Her impact reaches far beyond her business, as she has transformed access to foot health for many in need,“ says Yomi Pratt, GCA’s founder and President. “We are honoured to recognize her remarkable contributions and the lives she continues to change every day.”

With advanced training in gerontology, diabetic foot management, and nursing foot care, Emuan’s services are delivered through both mobile and clinic‑based programs, ensuring accessibility for seniors, high‑risk individuals, and those with limited mobility.

Her community partnerships include with the Glebe Abbotsford Seniors Centre, the Old Forge Resource Centre, New Edinburgh community programs, Sonshine Families in Rockland, the AIDS Committee of Ottawa, the Wabano Centre, and multiple long‑term care homes. On any given day, Sonia can be found providing attentive foot care – and cheerful advice  – to clients all across the city.

Emuan’s journey is one of determination and gratitude. Nearly 20 years ago, she arrived in Canada from Nigeria to pursue higher education. She quickly immersed herself in studies, becoming a registered nurse and later specializing in foot care, diabetes care, and gerontology.

Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish Sonia Foot Care, which now employs six nurses and is known across Ottawa for offering low‑cost or free services to underserved residents as part of her commitment to giving back.

“I was very, very glad when I came to Canada. I had so much help—now I really feel obligated,” says Emuan. “I was welcomed in Canada with kindness and support, and I promised myself I would give back in every way I could.”

Many in Ottawa would certainly say she has helped them walk the talk!

The award will be presented at the GCA-organized Black History Month gala, a major community celebration in the NCR on February 28, 2026. The GCA, founded in 2013 in Ottawa, recognizes local individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Black community.
